how to recover deleted or lost files on windows 10

You’ve just made a mistake or accidentally clicked on the wrong button, and now you’ve lost or deleted a very important file and don’t know how to get it back.

Well, don’t worry, in this post we are going to help you recover your important file. Let’s get started.

The Best Ways to Find or Recover Your File

You don’t have to feel distressed, there are several ways to find your file or to recover it in case you have deleted it. You may be asking: how can I recover my files? Here we will show you how to recover any lost or deleted files.

It’s important to keep in mind that a lost file is not the same as a deleted one, so first, we’ll talk about how to recover a lost one and then a deleted one. Alright, let’s get to it.

How to Recover a LOST File

The best ways to find a lost file are the following:

Organize your Documents and Folders

It could be the case that you have not deleted it, but that your desktop or the folders where you keep your documents are a mess. We advise you to organize your desktop or folders if that is the case. This is the first method that we recommend. Additionally, it is important to do this in order to prevent losing a file.

Use the Search Engine Function

Now, if the first method doesn’t work, the next thing to try would be to click on the “start” button that appears in the lower-left corner (the one with the Windows logo on your PC).

There is a bar where you can write that says “Search programs and files”. If you remember the name of the file, type it in there and the search engine will show you a series of documents, the file you are looking for may be among these (in case you have not deleted it).

Search in other places

Do you have a flash drive, an external hard drive, or do you use the OneDrive and Dropbox web services? Search those devices and these services too, your document could be there or you may at least have a copy saved.

These are the first things you should do before you start using other solutions or in case we have deleted it.

How to Recover a DELETED File

Well, now we’ll see what we can do when we’ve deleted or removed the document:

How to Find a Deleted File in the Trash

There’s a program that comes by default in Windows, can guess what it is? Hint: it’s a lifesaver for many people, including myself.

It’s the Recycle Bin! When you delete a document, either intentionally or by accident, it gets placed in the trash. You actually have to delete a document at least twice, which is good news for you if you accidentally deleted a file.

Check the trash and use the search engine. Most likely, the document you need is there.

Check your Windows Backup

Did you know that Windows backs up files and folders? It almost seems too good to be true and you’re probably very happy to know that right now.

Well, it does this automatically. To find your backed up files, just go to:

Control Panel > System and Maintenance > Backup and Restore.

Once there, you have to select “Restore my files” and follow the steps indicated by the wizard.

How to Recover Previous Versions of a File or Folder

For this option, you only have to open the folder where the lost files are located. The good news is that it’s easy to find!

Just open the file browser and navigate to where this folder is located, for example:

If your file was in C:/Files/Documents you should go to C:/Files and there you should be able to see the “Documents” folder.

When you’re there, just right-click on the folder icon (which in this case would be “documents”) and select the option “Restore previous versions”.

Then, you will be shown a number of different versions of the file over time. Press “Restore” or “Open” on the file you want and that’s it, you can view it in whatever program you want.

Recover Files with Software

If none of the above points worked for you and you couldn’t find or retrieve your file and you want to know if there’s another way.

Well, there is still another way, and that’s using data recovery programs like the ones we’re going to talk about next.
